Long-Term Player Development (LTPD)

The Canada Soccer Pathway provides a roadmap to encourage the engagement and participation of all players in lifelong sport – for enjoyment of the game and physical activity.  The Pathway is built around the principles of Long-Term Player Development (LTPD) model.

The goal of LTPD is to create an environment that supports the physical and psychological development of the athlete commensurate with their stages of growth “…by tailoring training, competition and coaching to their needs at the appropriate stage of development.”

LTPD Stage 3: Learning to Train

Although we will experience challenges due to the virtual training season, we will incorporate as many elements of the LTPD Stage 3 module as possible. 

Canada Soccer states this stage is the “…golden age of learning, when children become less self-centered and are more able to reflect on their actions and learn from mistakes, provides an optimal window for further development of skills. The focus is on learning by doing, building a larger repertoire of soccer movements and teaching the basic principles of play in a fun and challenging environment.”

4 Core Training Elements

General Movement

10% of Training Session Time

  • Drills to improve agility (e.g., running, directional change), balance (e.g., jumping, landing) & coordination (e.g., combined movement) – also known as ABCs.
  • There are  some minor constraints within the virtual environment to achieve all training element goals.
Coordination

10% of Training Session Time

  • Drills to improve physical development (e.g., endurance, strength, speed),  touches, control & combined movement.
  • There will be some constraints within the virtual environment to achieve all training element goals.
Soccer Technique

40% of Training Session Time

  • Drills to improve core individual skills (e.g., dribbling, shooting, turning, passing), touches, critical thinking 
  • There are considerable  constraints within the virtual environment to achieve all training element goals.
Small-Sided Games

40% of Training Session Time

  • Games to develop dribbling, passing, shooting and critical thinking skills. 
  • My approach: To bring game elements into the practice environment, and integrate skill development & learning outcomes with the goal of effective application physical &  critical thinking skills on game day – “Practice like you play”
  • There are significant  constraints within the virtual environment to achieve all training element goals.
